Grade Separation: State Street/University Parkway

State Street Grade crossingThe construction of a bridge (also known as a grade separation) over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad tracks at State Street/University Parkway in the City and County of San Bernardino is now completed and open to the public. The project will help reduce traffic congestion on State Street due to train delays blocking the street at the railroad crossing.

About the Project

The project realigned State Street/University Parkway and now provides a bridge over the BNSF tracks that cross State Street, to eliminate the need for drivers to wait for trains. The newly constructed bridge accommodates two lanes of traffic, a sidewalk and a bicycle lane in each direction, as well as a center turn lane.
The project also realigned Nolan Street and Short Street where they intersect State Street. Traffic signals also were installed at the intersections of State and Short Street, Cajon Boulevard and Short Street and University Parkway and Interchange Drive.
Construction began in May 2007 and was completed in August 2008, with some finishing work continuing until early 2009. The costs of this project was more than $20 million, with funding primarily from the state’s Traffic Congestion Relief Program, and a contribution from BNSF railroad.
